BEST BETS AT DC MUSIC VENUES
Slim Cessna's Auto Club
TUES Oct. 16 @ DC9
Ever wonder what would happen if moonshine drinking hillbillies dropped acid? My guess is something like Slim Cessna. Insane hillbilly rock probably won’t catch on, but it’s got a beat you can dance to, is often very funny, and is certainly something worth seeing.
Sounds like: Southern Culture on the Skids
Sample track: “This is How We Do Things in the Country”

British Sea Power
FRI Oct 19 @ Black Cat -- $13
Manchester band British Sea Power wears their brit-pop roots in their name and in their music. The ghosts of great Manchester bands past like the Stone Roses can be heard here…maybe a little Pixies in there too….
Sounds like: Coldplay and Interpol had a baby
Sample track: “Please Stand Up”

Stars **SOLD OUT**
SAT. OCT. 20 @ 9:30 Club -- $20.00
Another one of the gazillion really good Canadian bands running around North America. Stars’ music is delicate and pretty indie-rock.
Sounds like: Broken Social Scene, Feist, The Smiths, The Shins
Sample track: “Take Me to the Riot”

She Wants Revenge
SAT. OCT. 27 @ Black Cat -- $16
This was one of the best live shows I saw last year. While they are darker and take themselves a little too seriously, She Wants Revenge has some undeniably great songs. "Out of Control," "Tear You Apart," and "These Things" are all stellar.
Sounds like: Depeche Mode
Sample track: “Take Me to the Riot”

Band of Horses
FRI Nov. 2 @ 9:30 Club -- $20.00
Band of Horses’ lush, beautiful album “Everything All the Time” is filled with graceful, gorgeous rock songs and was probably the best album of last year.
Sounds like: Sigur Ros learned to speak English and listened to allot of My Morning Jacket and the Shins
Sample track: “Funeral”

The Thermals
SAT Nov 3 @ Black Cat -- $13
The Thermals make lo-fi punk music that’s fun to listen to.
Sounds like: The Ramones were resurrected with spliced DNA from Guided by Voices
Sample track: “Test Pattern” or “Returning to the Fold”
http://www.myspace.com/thethermals
Rogue Wave
MON Nov 5 @ Black Cat -- $13
With fragile, pretty songs like “Eyes,” Rogue Wave seems destined to become regular accompaniment to weepy scenes on movie soundtracks.
Sounds like: Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins
Sample track: “Eyes” or “Chicago x 12”
http://www.myspace.com/roguewave
Menomena
TUES Nov 6 @ Black Cat -- $12
Menomena’s new album, Friend and Foe, may be the best rock album this year. Menomena’s music is dense and complex with layer-upon-layer of sound, but instead of sounding like a cacophony it all works together – almost symphonic.
Sounds like: The Shins
Sample track: “Wet and Rustling”
http://www.myspace.com/menomena
The Subdudes
THURS Nov 8 @ The State Theater (Falls Church)
New Orleans-based band the Subdudes blend soul with a bit of Zydeco to create a sound that is uniquely theirs.
Sounds like: Al Green meets Dr. John
Sample track: “Known to Touch Me”
http://www.myspace.com/thesubdudes
VHS or Beta
MON Nov 12 @ Black Cat -- $13
VHS or Beta is the darker side of new new-wave. They sound like the 80s were new all over again. Viva synth…
Sounds like: Joy Division, the Killers
Sample track: “The Melting Moon”
http://www.myspace.com/vhsorbeta
The Swell Season
SUN Nov 18 @ Lincoln Theater
The Swell Season are Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech musician Markéta Irglová, the duo that starred in and composed the music for the film “Once.” These are some of the prettiest songs you’ll ever hear.
Sounds like: Elliot Smith returns from the grave and records an album with Emmylou Harris
Sample track: “If You Want Me”
http://www.myspace.com/theswellseason
Dinosaur Jr.
TUES Nov 27 @ Black Cat - $20
It came from the 90s! College-rock heroes Dinosaur Jr. are back with a new album and a tour to back it. I never got to see Dinosaur Jr. in college and look forward to getting a chance now.
Sounds like: The Pixies
Sample track: “Feel the Pain”
